Stress Management and Study Skills with BAC2School at SMK Raja Zarina

Back to another school! This time it's SMK Raja Zarina where the BAC2School team engaged with 300 Form 5 students with insightful sessions on Stress Management and Study Skills.

This collaboration between the school’s Unit Bimbingan & Kaunseling, Unit Kurikulum and trainers from University Malaysia of Computer Science and Engineering (UNIMY) UNIMY, aimed to equip students with essential skills as they prepare for their exams. The event was held at Dataran Hasimah, providing a comfortable setting for students to learn and interact.

Stress Management

The programme was split into two main sessions, the first one being 'Stress Management'. This session, led by trainers Shahirah and Mr. Taran, opened with a discussion on the importance of managing stress, especially during crucial exam periods.

The trainers introduced the DASS test to assess the students' current stress levels, helping them become more aware of how stress impacts their well-being. To provide practical stress relief, they demonstrated two key techniques: the Box Breathing Technique and Muscle Relaxation Technique. These techniques not only help regulate stress but also improve focus and relaxation.

The trainers used relatable examples and video demonstrations to make the session more engaging. Students actively participated in the exercises, finding them easy to implement in their daily routines. The techniques were well-received, with many students commenting on their simplicity and effectiveness in reducing anxiety, making this session highly interactive and beneficial.

Study Skills

The second session focused on Study Skills, led by Dr. Juhanita, with support from Dr. Salamiah. The session emphasised the importance of preparing strategically for exams, with a special focus on identifying and leveraging each student’s dominant learning style. The activity allowed students to discover whether they were visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners.

  • Visual learners were encouraged to use tools like diagrams, charts, mind maps, color-coded notes, and flashcards.
  • Auditory learners were advised to engage in techniques like listening to recorded lectures, reading notes aloud, or studying with a partner to verbalise concepts.
  • Kinesthetic learners were shown how incorporating movement into study sessions, such as walking while reciting notes or engaging in hands-on activities, could improve retention and understanding.

Dr. Juhanita also introduced the Pomodoro Technique to help students manage their study time effectively by scheduling regular breaks, preventing burnout, and maintaining focus. At the end of the session, Dr. Salamiah provided reflection sheets for students to document their key takeaways and reflect on how they could implement these study strategies moving forward.

Successful Engagement

The BAC2School team want nothing more than the students we impact to be engaged, and to have learned something. Thankfully, we are proud to say, yet again, that the students were highly engaged throughout both sessions, actively participating in the discussions and activities.

Many of them expressed appreciation for the practical strategies shared by the trainers, recognising how these techniques could be applied immediately in their exam preparations. The event not only provided valuable stress management techniques but also equipped students with tailored study strategies based on their unique learning styles.

This successful programme demonstrated the impact of collaboration between BAC, UNIMY and SMK Raja Zarina in supporting students as they navigate the pressures of academic life. The students left the session feeling more prepared and confident in handling the challenges of their upcoming exams. With valuable tools in hand, they are now better equipped to manage both their stress and their study schedules, setting them on the path to success.

The BAC2School program continues to make a significant difference in empowering students across Malaysia, offering them the skills they need to excel not only academically but also in life. We look forward to future collaborations with SMK Raja Zarina and other schools as we strive to enrich students' educational experiences through practical and impactful workshops.
