UPLIFT's 1MillionDevices bridges digital divide

In a world that increasingly relies on digital access for education and communication, many communities still struggle with a lack of technological resources. The 1MillionDevices Project, carried out by UPLIFT (Pertubuhan Bangkit) in February and March 2022, is a vital initiative that aims to bridge this gap by providing essential digital devices to underserved families. This project reflects UPLIFT's ongoing mission to empower vulnerable communities and help them adapt to the growing demands of the digital age.

Addressing the Digital Divide

For many families living in low-income housing projects (PPRs) in Malaysia, access to digital devices such as tablets and laptops is not a given. Without these tools, children from these communities are often left behind, especially as schools increasingly rely on online resources and e-learning, a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognising this need, UPLIFT launched the 1MillionDevices Project as part of its broader commitment to community development and educational equality. The project distributed tablets to families in the Klang Valley, focusing on those living in PPR Batu Muda and PPR Seri Alam. The aim was to equip children with the devices necessary to access online learning and educational resources.

Distribution to Families

From 9th February to 3rd March 2022, UPLIFT successfully distributed tablets to four families, reaching a total of 12 household members. The recipients were carefully selected based on need, with the distribution coordinated through UPLIFT’s network of community leaders and volunteers.

The recipients included:

- Muhammad Irfan Muhaimin (PPR Batu Muda) – 9th February 2022
- Muhammad Afif Afif (PPR Batu Muda) – 9th February 2022
- Muhamad Basyir (PPR Seri Alam) – 10th February 2022
- Muhamad Rayyan Shah (PPR Seri Alam) – 3rd March 2022

The distribution was more than just handing over tablets. Volunteers and community leaders ensured that the families were equipped with the knowledge to use the devices effectively for educational purposes. Unfortunately, one device received by Muhammad Irfan Muhaimin was broken. UPLIFT quickly addressed this issue by replacing the tablet with a refurbished laptop, ensuring that no child was left without the necessary tools for learning.

Impact of the 1MillionDevices Project

The 1MillionDevices Project serves as a crucial step toward narrowing the digital divide for low-income families. By providing children with access to digital devices, UPLIFT is empowering them to participate more fully in their education, enhancing their opportunities for future success. Access to online resources can drastically improve academic performance and open doors to new learning opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.

For the families involved, this initiative represents more than just receiving a device; it is an opportunity to build a brighter future for their children. The access to tablets and laptops not only aids in education but also helps families stay connected to essential online services, government resources and community support networks.

A Call for Continued Support

While the 1MillionDevices Project has made a significant impact, the work is far from over. Thousands of families in Malaysia still face barriers to digital access and initiatives like this one are essential for ensuring that all children have the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly connected world. UPLIFT continues to seek support from donors, partners and volunteers to expand this program to reach more families across Malaysia. By working together, we can ensure that no child is left behind in the digital age.
