IACT College Students and MIRM Launch What Book of Dementia Initiative
In December 2022, students from the MPU (Mata Pelajaran Umum) Project at IACT College, in collaboration with the Make It Right Movement (MIRM), launched an impactful initiative titled the What Book of Dementia. The project was designed to raise awareness about dementia and provide valuable information to help individuals and families better understand the condition. The project aimed to break the stigma associated with dementia, promote early detection and offer practical advice for caregivers and healthcare providers. The What Book of Dementia serves as both an educational guide and a resource for those directly or indirectly affected by dementia, including individuals living with the condition, their families and the broader community. This project is part of MIRM’s ongoing commitment to mental health advocacy and is a testament to the role that education can play in improving the lives of those affected by dementia.
The Purpose of the What Book of Dementia
Dementia is a progressive neurological condition that affects millions of people worldwide, including many elderly individuals in Malaysia. As the population ages, the prevalence of dementia is expected to rise, making it more important than ever to raise awareness and provide support for those affected. However, despite the growing number of cases, dementia remains poorly understood by the general public and those living with the condition often face stigma and isolation.
The What Book of Dementia was developed to address this gap by providing clear, accessible information about dementia, its symptoms, the progression of the disease and available treatments and care options. The project had several key objectives:
Raise Awareness about Dementia: The book seeks to educate the public about dementia, helping readers understand the early signs and symptoms, the different types of dementia and how the condition affects cognitive function over time. By providing this information, the project aims to encourage early diagnosis and treatment.
Reduce Stigma: One of the primary goals of the project is to reduce the stigma associated with dementia. Many people, including family members and caregivers, may feel uncertain or overwhelmed when dealing with a loved one’s diagnosis. The What Book of Dementia addresses common misconceptions about the condition and emphasizes that people living with dementia can still lead meaningful lives with the right support.
Provide Practical Guidance for Caregivers: Caring for someone with dementia can be challenging, especially as the disease progresses. The book offers practical advice and tips for caregivers on how to manage day-to-day tasks, provide emotional support and maintain the well-being of both the individual with dementia and the caregiver themselves.
Promote Early Detection and Intervention: The What Book of Dementia emphasises the importance of early detection, as recognising the early signs of dementia can lead to better outcomes and improved quality of life. By educating the public about the early warning signs, the project encourages individuals to seek medical advice when necessary.
Support Dementia Advocacy: The project also aims to support dementia advocacy efforts in Malaysia by encouraging discussions about the condition and highlighting the need for more resources, research and policy changes to support individuals and families affected by dementia.
The What Book of Dementia is organised into key sections to provide comprehensive information and support:
- Understanding Dementia:
This section explains what dementia is, its impact on the brain, the different types (including Alzheimer’s, vascular, Lewy body, and frontotemporal dementia), and risk factors like age, genetics, and lifestyle choices. - Recognising the Symptoms:
Focused on identifying early warning signs, this part details symptoms such as memory loss, confusion, and mood changes. It emphasises that persistent cognitive decline should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. - Diagnosis and Treatment:
Readers learn about the diagnostic process, assessments, and tests used to evaluate cognitive function, along with available treatments like medication, cognitive therapy, and lifestyle interventions. - Caring for Someone with Dementia:
This section offers practical tips for caregivers, covering daily activities, effective communication, emotional support, and ensuring safety. It also stresses the importance of caregiver self-care. - Living Well with Dementia:
Strategies for maintaining quality of life and independence for individuals with dementia are discussed, encouraging meaningful activities, social interaction, and mental stimulation. - Support and Resources:
This final section lists resources available in Malaysia, including support groups, counseling services, and helplines, encouraging individuals and families to seek help and connect with others.
MIRM and MPU students organised a Mental Health Workshop alongside the book's release, focused on dementia awareness and caregiving. Participants learned from mental health professionals about the emotional aspects of dementia care and were introduced to techniques for managing challenging behaviors and promoting mental well-being. The workshop fostered open dialogue, helping to reduce stigma and create a supportive community.
Impact and Reception of the What Book of Dementia
The What Book of Dementia received positive feedback from students, caregivers, and the broader community for its practical approach and accessible language. Mental health advocates praised it for filling a gap in dementia education in Malaysia, helping to dispel myths and encouraging early diagnosis and support.
Continuing the Conversation on Dementia
Following the project’s success, MIRM and MPU students plan to expand awareness initiatives through additional workshops and outreach programmes. They aim to collaborate with healthcare providers and NGOs to advocate for better dementia care and support services in Malaysia.
The What Book of Dementia, developed by IACT College students in collaboration with MIRM, is a vital resource for dementia awareness and education in Malaysia. By offering practical guidance on understanding and supporting individuals with dementia, the project helps break down stigma and promotes early intervention and care.
