Sexual Reproductive Health Training for Blind & Visually-Impaired Individuals (BVI) - St. Nicholas Home, Penang

It is of doubt that in today's modern society, information and education of sexual & reproductive healthcare is of utmost important. Throughout history, it is also submitted that the impact of education sexual and reproductive healthcare has tremendously saved lives and has benefited society as a whole.

Nevertheless, there is still a stigma attached to the concept of sexual and reproductive health within Malaysia. As such, the availability of information and/or education on sexual and reproductive health is not easily accessible. As such, the team at Make It Right Movement (MIRM) sought to approach this issue and break barriers by organising a Comprehensive Sexuality Workshop Session for Blind and Visually-Impaired Individuals (BVI).

WORKSHOP
On 12 July 2023, MIRM organised a Sexual Reproductive Health Training Session at St. Nicholas Home, Penang. This session focused on educating BVI(s) about sexual reproductive health and AIDS. The training aimed to provide vital information and raise awareness among BVI(s). The session was participated by approximately 20 BVI(s) whom were educated on important topics related to their health and well-being, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary for making informed decisions. The session essentially covers some basic concepts and issues in respect of sexual and reproductive health, e.g. the concept/idea of abortions, what amounts to sexual harassment and the importance of practicing safe sex.

Carmen Chu, the coordinator of St. Nicholas Home said that the session was well-received, highlighting the importance of comprehensive sexuality education in empowering BVI(s) to lead healthy and responsible lives.
