Digital Literacy and Online Security for Seniors
"In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” – Abraham Lincoln
The Make It Right Movement (MIRM) is committed to transforming lives and enriching communities, with a special focus on marginalised groups. As technology continues to advance at an unprecedented pace, many individuals struggle to keep up, and senior citizens are no exception. Having not grown up in an era of such rapid technological change, they often find it particularly challenging to navigate today’s fast-evolving digital landscape.
PURPOSE
MIRM sought to address this issue by conducting a workshop for senior citizens focusing on digital literacy and online security on 13th March 2024. The purpose of this initiative was to empower older adults with essential skills to navigate the digital world confidently and securely. The programme provided hands-on training in using digital devices, understanding online platforms, and safeguarding personal information from cyber threats.
WORKSHOP
Throughout this workshop, approximately 15 participants were exposed to various practical skills, including how to recognise phishing scams, set up secure passwords, and manage privacy settings on social media. The workshop also covered the basics of online communication tools, ensuring seniors could stay connected with family and friends effectively.
Amanda Kong, Community Development Manager of MIRM and Lead Trainer of the workshop, said that it was fruitful and fulfilling to assist these individuals in learning how to improve their online experience and to foster their independence and safety in an increasingly digital society.
