Strengthening Peace and Development in BARMM: MIRM’s Collaboration with the Asia Foundation on Project WEAVE

On 6th July 2024, the Make It Right Movement ("MIRM") had the privilege of meeting the Asia Foundation as part of Project WEAVE: Weaving Emerging and Active Voices for Peace and Stability in the Bangsamoro which aims to strengthen the effectiveness of government mechanisms and local solutions in driving transformative peace and development in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

As part of their continued support to the regional government under Project WEAVE, the Asia Foundation-Philippines sent a delegation from the BARMM Parliament to Malaysia. Overall, the study visit aimed to help participants from the region to learn about Malaysia’s experience in promoting and protecting Persons with Disability (PWDs) rights and benefits, as well as putting in place the institutional arrangements to support the effective design and implementation of PWD policies especially in light of Malaysia's multi-cultural society.

The delegation was led by two of the Deputy Floor Leaders of the Parliament, MP Atty. Raissa Jajurie and MP Atty. Anna Tarhata Basman, who were concurrently, the Minister of the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) and the Bangsamoro Attorney General, respectively. The other members of the delegation included the Assistant Attorney General, a staff from the MSSD in charge of PWD affairs, and two legislative staff. Two staff from TAF joined the delegation to provide logistical and administrative support.

Throughout this meeting, MIRM’s Community Development Manager, Amanda Kong shared about laws and policies in Malaysia, the current landscape, shortcomings, critical gaps and recommendations to improve the current system for the purposes of the study. Amanda said that she is looking forward to working with the delegation throughout this initiative.
