1Million Devices Laptop Donation Project
In an increasingly digital world, access to technology is crucial for educational success. However, many students from underprivileged communities in Malaysia face challenges in obtaining the devices they need to participate in online learning and to complete their studies. Recognising this gap, UPLIFT (Pertubuhan Bangkit) launched the Laptop Donation Project under 1Million Devices in April 2022, a life-changing initiative aimed at providing students from low-income families with the necessary tools to continue their education and succeed in today’s digital age.
This project was initiated by a group of Year 2 students from the BAC Education Group, who recognised the urgent need for digital access among students in underserved communities. Together, they organised a series of fundraising activities to raise money for the purchase of refurbished laptops. The project’s mission was to ensure that no student would be left behind simply because they lacked the technological resources to keep up with their studies. The project raised RM 5,158.05 through a combination of bake sales and an online donation drive. With these funds, UPLIFT was able to purchase and donate six refurbished laptops, which were distributed to students from low-income families across Malaysia.
Beneficiaries of the Project
The laptops were given to six students, each of whom came from families facing significant financial hardship. The recipients, who ranged in age from 6 to 18 years old, were identified through UPLIFT’s community network and selected based on their need for digital access to continue their studies.
- Muhammad Ashraff Haikal Ismail (17 years old)
- Muhammad Danish Wafir Bin Ismail (15 years old)
- Muhammad Iqbal Yassar Bin Ismail (13 years old)
- Muhammad Lutfil Hadi Bin Ismail (11 years old)
- Muhammad Izul Islam Bin Ismail (8 years old)
- Muhammad Isa Muslim Bin Ismail (6 years old)
The laptops were distributed to these students during a handover ceremony organised by UPLIFT and the BAC Education Group. The laptops will be instrumental in helping them participate in online classes, complete homework and access educational resources that were previously out of reach.
This initiative demonstrates the power of community support and the positive impact that small, local actions can have on the lives of others. The students' efforts also highlighted the importance of youth involvement in social causes, showcasing how individuals can make a tangible difference through collective action.
Impact on the Beneficiaries
For the six students who received the laptops, the impact was immediate and profound. Having access to a reliable digital device meant they could now keep up with their schoolwork, attend online classes and conduct research—all of which are essential components of modern education. Prior to receiving the laptops, many of these students had to rely on shared or outdated devices or in some cases, had no access to digital devices at all. This often placed them at a disadvantage compared to their peers. With the donation of these laptops, these students now have the tools they need to fully engage in their education and reach their academic potential.
Future Plans for the Laptop Donation Project
Although the initial phase of this project has been successfully completed, UPLIFT recognises that the need for digital access extends far beyond these six students. Many more students across Malaysia still face challenges in accessing the devices they need for their education.
In light of this, UPLIFT plans to expand this project with future rounds of fundraising and donations aimed at reaching even more students. The goal is to continue providing digital devices to those who need them most, ensuring that all students—regardless of their socioeconomic background—have the opportunity to succeed in school.
This is a shining example of how targeted, grassroots initiatives can create meaningful change in the lives of individuals. By providing students with access to the digital tools they need, UPLIFT is empowering the next generation to thrive in their education and beyond.
