Free Mammogram and Cervical Cancer Testing Initiative at PPR Pekan Batu

On 5th February 2022, a significant health initiative took place at PPR Pekan Batu, Batu 5, Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur. In collaboration with the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), UPLIFT (Pertubuhan Bangkit) organised a Free Mammogram and Cervical Cancer Testing event, aiming to raise awareness about women's health issues and promote early detection of cancer.

The initiative was a resounding success, with 23 women from the local community participating in free mammogram and cervical cancer screening services at Hospital Tung Shin. While the initial outreach effort mobilised more than 40 women between the ages of 35 and 70, 23 were able to attend the screenings due to logistical challenges. LPPKN played a critical role by covering hospital expenses and providing transportation for participants to and from the hospital. Additionally, refreshments were served to make the day more comfortable for the attendees.

This initiative was more than just about health screenings. It aimed to break down barriers and misconceptions about cancer prevention and to normalise regular health checks among women. By organising this event, UPLIFT is contributing to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reducing Inequalities, by ensuring that underprivileged communities have access to critical health services.

Impact and Community Engagement

During the screening, one participant was identified with a growth that required further medical evaluation. Her subsequent appointments and medical costs will be covered by LPPKN, demonstrating the programme's commitment to follow-through and ongoing care.

The involvement of community leader Ananthi Kanan, who coordinated the mobilisation of participants, was instrumental in the event's success. Not only did this event create an avenue for cancer prevention, but it also established a bridge between local communities and government agencies like LPPKN.

Next Steps

The success of this initiative has sparked further interest within the community. LPPKN has committed to organising additional trips for those who could not attend the first session and a local church group has expressed interest in joining future health screenings.

This mammogram and cervical cancer testing initiative is a testament to the power of community-driven health programmes. By focusing on education, prevention and accessibility, UPLIFT, with the help of LPPKN, is making a significant difference in the lives of women in PPR Pekan Batu. This programme not only addresses immediate health concerns but also empowers women with knowledge and access to resources, ensuring they have the tools to lead healthier lives.

As UPLIFT continues its efforts, there is hope that more women in underserved communities will take advantage of such opportunities, leading to earlier detection, better health outcomes and stronger communities.
