Jom Feel Fit & Fab Wellness Workshop
Empowering the B40 community
Focusing on Mental Wellness
Recently, BAC Education had the privilege of hosting a “Jom Feel Fit & Fab” wellness workshop in our PJ campus. Organised by the Malaysian Council of Peace for Unity, Education and Eco Foundation alongside Guru Dharma Society and Universal Peace Sanctuary Malaysia, the aim of this workshop was to uplift the B40 community by focusing on mental and physical well-being. With a strong emphasis on practical, everyday tips, the event encouraged participants to prioritise their health despite economic challenges.
Facilitators guided participants through exercises aimed at managing stress and improving mental health. Family physician and hypnotherapist Dr. Sarasijam Nair introduced participants to the “sustainme” concept, emphasising key elements of well-being: sunshine, water, sleep, stress avoidance, and more. She also demonstrated simple breathing exercises, such as inhaling and exhaling slowly while holding the breath for three counts, which was repeated to help participants relax and reduce stress.
Another facilitator, Dhillip Kumar, a naturopath and yoga teacher, shared practical tips on achieving balance in life. His focus on mental health encouraged participants to reflect on the importance of holistic wellness and how they can incorporate these practices into their daily routines.
Physical Health Screenings and Consultations
Physical health was also a major focus, with participants undergoing weight, height, blood pressure, and sugar level checks. Eight volunteer doctors from the Malaysia Diabetes Centre were present to provide consultations, and around 65 participants received screenings. Programme director Amsa Naidu revealed,
“Nearly 50% of the participants were unaware they had diabetes, underscoring the importance of these health screenings.”
Hands-On Wellness Activities and Booths
The event also featured six booths that offered educational demonstrations and activities on Dorn therapy, massages, ayurvedic practices, herbal products, and physiotherapy. These sessions provided practical and accessible ways for the B40 community to take control of their health and explore alternative wellness methods.
Addressing Mental Health Concerns in Malaysia
Amsa Naidu explained that this workshop was a response to the rising mental health issues in Malaysia, many of which are triggered by stressors such as exam pressure, family dynamics, and online harassment. The event’s organisers specifically targeted the B40 community, especially women who often neglect regular health screenings
A Positive Impact on the Community
The workshop was a much-needed platform for the B40 community to focus on both their mental and physical well-being. It not only encouraged participants to engage in self-care but also highlighted the importance of regular health check-ups and stress management techniques. By offering holistic solutions for a healthier lifestyle, the “Jom Feel Fit & Fab” event made a meaningful difference in the lives of those who attended.
