Make It Right Movement's Work Different Session

Microaggressions & Empowerment

"Great communication begins with connection." - Oprah Winfrey

In every circumstance of everyone's daily life, one constant truth in relationships is the fact that "communication is key". As such, the Make It Right Movement (MIRM) believes that in order for any organisation or community to be diverse and inclusive, there is the need to ensure that there is clear communication that does not involve any form of "microaggression". The question then arises as to what is meant by "microaggression"?

As part of the BAC Education Group (BACEG) Work Different initiative, MIRM had the privilege of organising a training workshop on 5 January 2024, focusing on the various forms of microaggression and the need for empowerment. The workshop was attended by staff as part of their training programme. The workshop was led by Pien Petter, Intern at MIRM.

The purpose of this workshop was to enhance awareness and understanding of microaggressions in the workplace. The training focused on identifying subtle forms of discrimination and provided practical strategies in order to address/mitigate these issues. Participants engaged in interactive sessions, role-playing scenarios, and discussions to better recognise various forms of microaggressions and were provided with various measures to foster a more inclusive environment.

Members of the Group provided that the workshop highlighted and increased sensitivity to the impact of microaggressions and fostered a commitment to creating a supportive and respectful workplace culture. Davin Tharmalingam, Senior Executive of MIRM stated that the workshop "underscored the importance of ongoing education and dialogue in addressing subtle biases and reinforcing a culture of empathy and respect."
