Psychological First Aid (PFA) Session for the Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI)

St. Nicholas Home, Penang

The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” – Helen Keller

The Make It Right Movement (MIRM) envisions transforming lives and enriching communities, with a special focus on marginalised groups, including neurodiverse children.

SITUATION
Amanda Kong, Community Development Manager of MIRM has acknowledged that Blind and/or Visually-Impaired individuals (BIV) tend to be side-lined and ignored in terms of assistance, support and opportunities in society. As such, in light of today's context surrounding the issue of mental health, the issue arises as to whether BIV individuals are also provided with the equal opportunity to seek assistance and support in terms of their mental health which are more catered to their needs.

PURPOSE
MIRM sought to address this issue by conducting a Psychological First-Aid (PFA) workshop for the visually impaired, wherein participants who were visually impaired individuals were enlightened on various issues surrounding mental health including:

1. The importance of mental health
2. Obstacles and challenges to our mental health
3. What matters a person could control
4. How to seek assistance on mental health issues, etc

These workshops were specifically aimed to provide emotional support, enhance coping skills, and promote resilience among participants.

WORKSHOP
On 13 July 2023, MIRM organised a PFA workshop for BVI individuals in St. Nicholas Home, Penang wherein approximately 30 participants consisting of BVI individuals engaged in various activities, dialogues, and interactions surrounding the issue of mental health.

Carmen Chu, the Coordinator from St. Nicholas Home commented that the programme was well-received by the participants, which fostered a supportive environment, contributing to the overall well-being of the BVI individuals.
