Uplift Delivers Urgent Aid to Myanmar Refugee Families on Deepavali
As many celebrated Deepavali with loved ones, the Myanmar refugee community at Tahfiz Rumah Yatim in Taman Sri Muda was facing a dire need for basic groceries. The call for help reached Uplift on Deepavali morning, and in a heartwarming display of solidarity, the community rallied together, raising RM4000 in just a few hours. By 5 p.m. the same day, Uplift volunteers delivered critical supplies to 30 refugee families.
This swift and compassionate response was made possible thanks to the generosity of donors and the tireless work of volunteers. The families received essential items, including rice, onions, garlic, potatoes, cooking oil, dhal, sugar, salt, sardines, and Maggi Mee—staples that will sustain them through difficult times.
Moo Tik Pin, Uplift's Treasurer and Head of Group Student Engagement at BAC Education, played an instrumental role in coordinating the funding and logistics. Reflecting on the experience, he shared,
“The response from our donors was overwhelming, and it demonstrates the power of community support. To see the aid reach those in need on the very same day was inspiring, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of our supporters.”
The quick mobilisation was also made possible by the coordination efforts of Ustaz Faizal who liaised with both Uplift and the families in need. Expressing his gratitude, he said, “On behalf of the families, I want to thank everyone who contributed. This kind of immediate assistance provides more than just food; it offers hope and a sense of solidarity. These families now know they are not alone, even in the most challenging times.”
The Myanmar refugees in Taman Sri Muda, many of whom face an uncertain future, often rely on the kindness of others to meet basic needs. This rapid response from Uplift, combined with the contributions from compassionate individuals, ensured that these families were able to observe Deepavali with the comfort of knowing that their community cares.
